The Community Garden Council of Waterloo Region envisions a strong, supportive infrastructure enabling residents to plant and harvest their own food.
Our mission is to promote and sustain community gardens throughout Waterloo Region.
The Community Garden Council (CGC) has updated their terms of reference document, the latest copy is available here. This document lists the rules and policies that the council operates under to promote and manage community gardens. We are always recruiting new members. Garden coordinators are encouraged to attend CGC meetings. We are always looking for members to take active roles. If interested in taking on a committee role, fill out the application form and contact Carol at 519-883-2004 ext. 5336.
We meet on the third Tuesday of the month except for July. Our meetings are open to the public. Read our monthly minutes here.
We are working towards supportive municipal policies that will help sustain community gardens for the long term. See our proposal here. The Regional Municipality has included community gardens in their Regional Official Plan under section 3f. We are currently encouraging each municipality to include community gardens as a part of their Municipal Official Plans.
We are also working towards accessible gardening; gardens that are physically accessible and ethnoculturally inclusive. We have sucessfully obtained a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to implement accessibility features into four local community gardens.
